In this day and age, most things are about efficiency and speed and this goes doubly so when it comes to taking health supplements. Think about it, natural health supplements can greatly simplify life for many of us who have one nutritional shortcoming or another.

I always advocate for people to get all their daily nutritional requirements from the food they eat. Any colorful diet has a nice variety of fruits and vegetables and lean, grass-fed or wild-caught animal protein. Of course, vegans and vegetarians can get their protein from plant sources as well.

Is there any occasion in which it is okay to take natural health supplements? Read along to find out more.

Should We Take Health Supplements?

As mentioned above, we really should get all of our nutrients from the foods we eat, however, there are times when food alone may not be enough. This could be because the body may require much more of a particular nutrient than we can get from food alone. It could also be a matter of malabsorption, meaning that the body is not able to properly absorb nutrients from food sources. In the latter case, a visit to the doctor is highly recommended.

I can personally speak to the need to take health supplements because I take a few to help with various issues including joint and muscle pain as well as whole food supplements for those times when I don’t have time to prepare a vegetable-heavy meal. Other people may need to take health supplements to help with problems like inflammation and digestive issues.

Read along for a brief review of some of the natural health supplements that I use to make my life more enjoyable and pain-free. Feel free to research them to see if they can be of benefit to you and your family.

Liquid Glucosamine and Chondroitin

I must start my list of recommended health supplements with liquid glucosamine chondroitin because it has had a great impact on my well-being. After hitting my forties, I began experiencing joint pain in my knees and shoulders. The pain was most noticeable the day after I did cardio exercises like push-ups and squats. As you can imagine, I was quite dismayed to have arrived at this point in my life. I was getting old!

I did some research on joint pain and inflammation and found out that as we age, the cartilage and tissues in between our joints begin to thin and disintegrate and our bodies which naturally produce these substances, cannot keep up with the loss. In need of some relief from the pain in my joints, my research led me to several sources including pain pills and liquid glucosamine and chondroitin.

Let’s first examine what constitutes these two elements. According to WebMD, “glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are components of normal cartilage. In the body, they are the building blocks for cartilage and appear to stimulate the body to make more cartilage.”

The research on liquid glucosamine and chondroitin shows that the supplement has a negligible effect on osteoarthritis and is in line with the relief experienced by patients using prescription Celebrex (painkiller). After learning the fact that a liquid glucosamine compound may have the same effect as a prescription drug, albeit slightly, I decided to give the supplement a try.

I purchased a bottle of NOW Liquid Glucosamine & Chondroitin with MSM (MSM is a chemical compound that multiple human and animal trials indicate may reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.) I took one tablespoon per day as recommended on the label.

After 2 or 3 days of taking the liquid glucosamine chondroitin, I noticed that the joint pain in my shoulders and knees was significantly reduced. Needless to say, I was amazed that the supplement worked! Now whenever I overdo it with exercise and I know that I will pay for it the next day, I make sure to take my liquid glucosamine chondroitin for the next 2 or 3 days as needed.

I never overdo it with supplements and I like to combine them with food remedies (like turmeric tea for inflammation) I will recommend anyone who needs a little help with joint pain to try liquid glucosamine with chondroitin to see if it will help.

Natural CALM Supplement

My next go-to natural health supplement is Natural Calm made by Natural Vitality. I first discovered this supplement when I started experiencing insomnia and mild anxiety. As always, I did some research on what may be causing my anxiety and insomnia because I could not determine what was causing my symptoms.

My internet research led me to Psychology Today where their doctors state the following:

“It’s not uncommon for people, especially women, to have less-than-optimal magnesium levels. Because magnesium plays such a widespread, critical role in the body—it’s one of the 24 essential vitamins and minerals—low magnesium levels can throw many of the body’s functions off course, and raise risks for chronic health problems.”

Among the chronic health problems that can arise from magnesium deficiency are:

  • Heart Disease
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Hypertension
  • Pain and Inflammation

So how does magnesium work in our bodies? According to Psychology Today, magnesium:

  • Plays a key role in energy production, activating ATP, the energy molecule that fuels your body’s cells
  • Regulates transport of calcium, potassium, and other essential minerals, helping muscles and nerves function properly, and maintaining heart rhythm
  • Regulates blood pressure, cholesterol production, and blood glucose levels
  • Aids bone development and guards against bone loss
  • Functions as an electrolyte, maintaining fluid balance in your body
  • Helps control your body’s stress-response system and hormones that elevate or diminish stress

After reading up on the many benefits of magnesium supplementation, I decided to try the Natural CALM brand because of the high reviews it received on Amazon and other online, health-focused websites.

I began taking CALM magnesium and calcium supplement and I saw an immediate benefit. I was apparently one of the many women who did indeed have a magnesium deficiency because once I began taking CALM, my anxiety faded and falling asleep came much easier to me.

I’ve since discovered another benefit derived from taking CALM. One day, I developed a severe muscle cramp in my right thigh. The pain was so intense that I screamed and couldn’t move. Thinking quickly, I asked my partner to prepare some CALM for me. I felt immediate relief from the cramp when I drank the supplement. I was amazed and extremely grateful that I had some CALM on hand to take away the pain and now, I always keep a canister in my kitchen cupboard.

Garden of Life Perfect Food Super Green Formula

My final supplement recommendation for this article is the Garden of Life Perfect Food Super Green Formula. I take this particular supplement whenever I feel lazy about cooking and eating my daily requirements of fruit and green vegetables. Again, it’s always best to get your nutrients from the food you prepare but whenever you’re in a pinch for time or are just not in the mood to cook, you can easily get your daily dose of veggies from powdered vegetables.

Garden of Life Perfect Food Super Green Formula has a four and half-star rating on Amazon. This is because this supplement is packed with great nutrients all derived from whole fruits, vegetables, and pre/probiotics for gut health. Garden of Life Perfect Food Super Green Formula contains the following ingredients:

  • Superfood Supplement: This greens powder is packed with green whole grasses and grass juices, micro algae, sea vegetables, whole vegetables, sprouted grains, seeds, legumes, and acerola cherries
  • Immune System Support: This greens supplement contains spirulina for immune support and alkalizing minerals from algae and cereal grass juices
  • Highly Concentrated: One serving of this superfood supplement is equivalent to 140 grams of fresh grass juice
  • Digestive Support: Garden of Life greens powder contains a Probiotic Blend for digestion support
  • Low Carb: This superfood powder supports healthy carbohydrate metabolism for those on low-carb diets or people unable to eat enough green foods

As you can see from these ingredients, you get a full spectrum of the benefits we get from vegetables including antioxidants, digestive enzymes, pre/probiotics for gut health, and a healthy immune system. These qualities alone make Garden of Life Perfect Food Super Green Formula one of the best supplements you can add to your roster.

Final Thoughts on Natural Health Supplements

Taking natural health supplements can greatly enhance your life by providing pain relief, better sleep, and better overall health. My only caveat is that you consult your doctor before adding these or any other supplements to your diet.

Also, always seek to get most of your nutrients from sources including, organic produce, and grass-fed or wild-caught animal proteins. I advise using supplements to make up for any shortfalls you may have in your daily diet but don’t depend solely on them for all your nutritional needs.

  • Hi, nice article, thanks for sharing. I’ve never heard about Organic Super Food Greens, but it seems to be a great and convienient way to substitute for daily set og vegetables and fruits. Reffering to the joint pain, have you ever tried supplements with CBD? I heard that they works very well and have no siede effects. What do you think about that?

  • Hi there!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us.
I have a question thought, do you know of any natural supplement that will enhance my muscle growth and performance ? Thank you in advance

    • Hi Junaid,

You’re welcome! As for supplements for muscle growth and performance you can try creatine, but be aware of potential side effects. Try to eat lean proteins that are grass-fed and/or wild caught to feed your muscles and help them grow.

      Cheers,
      Dawn
