If you’ve been following along with this blog, you know that I’ve been on all sorts of diets and eating plans to lose weight. Over time, I’ve learned that my body type responds most effectively to low-carb diets. Low-carb diets like Atkins and Keto are notoriously difficult to follow because the dieter has to drastically slash many of their favorite foods including bread, biscuits, pancakes, and the like.

Adding to the difficulty of following low-carb diets is finding a low-carb flour that is reminiscent of regular all-purpose flour. The available options like almond flour and coconut flour can only go so far in imitating traditional wheat flour recipes. My research for a low-carb flour that closely mimics regular wheat flour led me to the Carbquick Biscuit and Baking Mix. This is the only low-carb substitute available today that will make you think you’re eating traditional flour.

Like all things in life, Carbquick has its pros and cons. Read on to find out more.

What Is Carbquick Biscuit and Baking Mix?

Carbquik Biscuit and Bake Mix is a revolutionary low-carb flour and baking mix with only 2 net grams of carbs per 32-gram serving. Made by TOVA Industries, Carbquick flour consists of the following ingredients:

  • Carbalose flour (enzyme-enriched wheat, vital wheat gluten, high-protein wheat flour, soy fiber, canola oil, salt, emulsifiers, enzymes, and ascorbic acid)
  • Palm and palm kernel oil
  • Buttermilk powder
  • Baking powder
  • Egg white powder
  • Lecithin
  • Salt
  • Natural Flavors

A look at the ingredients in Carbquick lets you know right away that this is not a gluten-free flour and it contains several allergens including wheat, soy, eggs, and milk. That said, I was surprised to discover that for a processed product, it didn’t include too many unrecognizable frankenfood ingredients.

TOVA’s proprietary process uses enzymes to break down the carbohydrates in regular wheat flour and renders it into Carbalose low-carb flour. The Carbolose flour is combined with other leavening ingredients to produce Carbquick – a low-carb bake mix that’s suitable for practically all kinds of foods that require regular all-purpose flour.

Who Should Use Carbquick?

I am being totally honest when I say that I like to mitigate personal suffering in any endeavor I undertake that may involve pain or deprivation. It was with this mindset that I researched to find a product that would make my following a low-carb diet infinitely easier and more satisfying.

I say this to say that anyone following Atkins, Keto, or any other low-carb diet should incorporate Carbalose flour and Carbquick baking mix into their low-carb flour arsenal. Carbquick baking mix lets you enjoy some of your favorite baked goods without fear of being knocked out of ketosis or going above allotted daily carb levels. Some of what you can make with Carbquick include:

  • Cheese biscuits
  • Pancakes & Waffles
  • Brownies, cheesecake, muffins, cinnamon buns, etc.
  • Gravies
  • Pizza

You can substitute Carbquick baking mix for pretty much anything you make with regular wheat flour. The only difference is that you won’t be sacrificing taste for carbs like you would by using an alternative low-carb flour like almond or coconut flour.

Carbquick’s Shortcomings

As I mentioned above, Carbquick contains many allergenic ingredients including wheat, gluten, soy, eggs, and milk. Anyone with sensitivities or intolerance to these ingredients should not use the Carbquick bake mix. By its very nature, Carbquick baking mix is a processed food and as such should not be consumed in excess.

My personal belief is that we can and should eat the foods we enjoy but with moderation. Accordingly, I only use Carbquick occasionally when I feel like having pancakes or my manchego cheese biscuits. Using Carbquick baking mix along with other low-carb flour options helps to keep me on an even keel where I get to enjoy traditionally high-carb foods without the fear of obliterating any weight loss I achieve.

What Others Are Saying About Carbquick

As always I like to include verified reviews from Amazon to illustrate what others are saying or feel about the product. On Amazon, Carbquick enjoys a 4.1 out of 5-star rating from 3,389 reviews. That’s a lot of reviews! On Netrition, where I get my carbquick, it has a 4.7/5 star rating with 863 reviews.

I am including a few reviews here from both sites to show the spectrum of experiences with this low-carb bake mix. These reviews are the most recent reviews available for carbquick bake mix on both Amazon and Netrition.

Kevin Ill: 5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfied. April 19, 2019 Color: Original Version Verified Purchase

Wayne: 3.0 out of 5 stars Its good but not great. April 18, 2019 Color: Original Version Verified Purchase

This is a great alternative to regular flour. I tried several recipes on the box with more of them not tasting great, only a few did. The pancakes were a disappointment along with the muffins. However, the best thing IMO was the “red lobster” biscuits. They were awesome. I burned my first batch so watch the oven, I put them in for the recommended amount of time and they burned. I will use this flour as a substitute for regular flour in other recipes not found on the box. Overall it was good but not great.

Netrition Reviews

5/5 stars. April 06, 2019 – Reviewer: JOSEPH in Pennsylvania

We’ve been using Carbquik for many years, in various recipes, with successful results.

1/5 stars. April 03, 2019 – Reviewer: MELISSA in North Carolina

Tasted terrible the pancakes were awful had to throw out the entire batch and won’t be using again.

5/5 stars. March 12, 2019 – Reviewer: Karen in Texas

I’ve used Carbquik off and on for the past 4 years, and I was really sold on it when I made the most amazing cinnamon rolls with it. Since then, my son decided he’d like me to make some lower carb rolls for him. I made Carbquik rolls with cheddar cheese, and he was very, very impressed. Wonderful taste with a tender texture. We made little breakfast sandwiches with eggs and cheese. Fantastic!

You will note that most of these reviews are positive, but there are several that are either three stars or one star. I’ve found that most of the negative reviews are either the result of receiving a bad batch of Carbquick, which is known to happen, or a person’s taste buds didn’t like the slight processed taste that can be detected in the product.

Final Thoughts on Carbquick Biscuit and Baking Mix

Anyone following a low carb or ketogenic diet can use carbquick baking mix as a low carb flour option. Keeping in mind that it is a processed food and should only be enjoyed on occasion, feel free to use carbquick to make your favorite biscuits, cakes, muffins or whatever other normally carb-laden foods you like.

Using carbquick bake mix along with other low-carb fours like the THM bake mix, almond flour, and coconut flour nicely round out my options for low-carb flour.

Incorporating carbquick biscuit and baking mix into your pantry will greatly enhance your enjoyment of following Atkins, Keto or any other low carb diet. I personally give carbquick a rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 stars and recommend it for anyone looking for an alternative low carb flour option.

  • As I was reading this review I had a difficulty in understanding what is being discussed not because of poor presentation but generally I lack the knowledge in nutritional terms and topics.

However, I can clearly understand what proper weight is which is the primary intention of a healthy individual. And so diet is to be  taken and observed.

This carbquick biscuits and baking mix are recommended because it’s beneficial  and scientifically effective for the purpose of maintaining a proper weight and generally overall a healthy body.

  • Hi Dawn,

Awesome review! I have been on the keto diet for the better part of the last year and am always looking for low-carb options for cooking and baking. I’m surprised to say that I’ve never heard of carbquick! This sounds like awesome stuff. It can be so hard to find low-carb things like this that actually work so I’m always excited when I do. I can’t wait to try this out. Definitely a bit of a bummer that it has gluten/wheat, but like you said in moderation it’s not a huge deal for some. Thank you!!

    • Hi Dan,
