CBD the non-psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant is a natural medicine that can help with several ailments including anxiety, pain, and seizures. Even more astonishing is the latest question about CBD, namely: can CBD help you lose weight?

Anyone unfamiliar with cannabidiol, or CBD, may be surprised to learn its association with weight loss. After all, the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) found in cannabis has long been known to do the exact opposite, i.e. it stimulates the appetite. However, now that medicinal cannabis is legal in more parts of the world, new research (linked below) has found that industrial hemp-derived CBD may affect weight. But how exactly does CBD act to help us lose weight? Read on and find out.

What is CBD and How Does it Work?

CBD is just one of the over 100 compounds called cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. After THC the psycho-active compound that causes a “high”, CBD is the second most plentiful cannabinoid, comprising up to 40 percent of some cannabis extracts. While THC is known for its intoxicating effects, CBD doesn’t get you high.

Studies have shown that CBD may offer its benefits by stimulating certain receptors in our body’s endocannabinoid system and prolonging the effects of the “bliss molecule” anandamide. By allowing anandamide to remain in the body longer, it works to help soothe soreness and also helps in other areas of the body as well. CBD may also support the body by helping to decrease the number of inflammatory molecules called cytokines

Still, what does this all have to do with weight loss?

4 Ways CBD May Help with Weight Loss

1. CBD’s Effects on Food Intake

Unlike THC, CBD does not make you hungry. Though there haven’t been many studies on the effects of CBD on weight loss, one study found CBD could actually reduce food intake. Researchers compared three cannabinoids and found that CBD minimized total food consumption in rats. It works by helping to block the overflow of neurotransmitters, which leads to binge-eating behaviors, thus regulating appetite and weight. However, as these tests were done on rats, more research on the effects of CBD on human appetite is still needed.

2. Using CBD to Combat Stress-Eating

Many people turn to food to help them deal with stress. The endorphins that stress eaters get from eating unhealthy comfort foods may effectively battle stress hormones, but it does so at the cost of weight gain, as well as other health problems. Because CBD has been found to help ease stress and anxiety, it may curb this behavior and prevent you from putting on unwanted pounds due to stress-eating.


3. CBD and Breaking Down Fat

One study published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry found that CBD stimulates the genes and proteins that help break down fat. CBD speeds up “fat browning”, which is the process that turns the white fat cells linked with obesity into healthier brown fat cells that generate energy. The researchers also found that CBD may increase the activity of mitochondria, boosting the body’s ability to burn calories while decreasing the number of proteins involved in fat cell generation.

4. CBD to Manage Blood Sugar

Sugar is a highly addictive substance that can wreak havoc on your health and weight. Once diabetes develops, the body becomes more resistant to insulin, causing more fat absorption. CBD has been found to minimize insulin resistance, thereby decreasing fat build-up.  

How to Use CBD Oil for Weight Loss

Though more studies need to be done on CBD’s effects on human weight management, CBD is quite safe and has very few side effects. While the findings of recent research are promising, it’s important to note that these studies are still in their early stages. However, when coupled with a healthy diet and exercise, CBD oil could very well lead to faster, healthier weight loss.

I used to love this dish as a little girl. Cured cod, desalted and stewed with colorful peppers, onions, and loads of spices. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water! If you’re looking to shake up your breakfast routine with something hearty and full of flavor, look no further than one of my favorites – Saltfish Buljol. This Caribbean classic is protein-packed and perfect for starting your day with a burst of savory goodness.

Why Saltfish Buljol is a Caribbean Classic:

Saltfish Buljol has been a staple in Caribbean kitchens for generations, and it’s easy to see why. The combination of salt-cured cod with fresh veggies and herbs is pure magic. Whether you’re serving it with bakes, bread, or just on its own, every bite brings a taste of the islands right to your plate.

The Ingredients:

Here’s what you’ll need to whip up your own Saltfish Buljol:

  • Salted dried cod (or salted Alaskan pollock): The star of the show, with its savory, rich flavor.
  • Avocado oil or light olive oil: For a light, healthy base to sauté the aromatics.
  • Diced tomatoes: They bring a fresh, juicy element to balance out the saltiness.
  • Onions, diced: For that essential aromatic base and a bit of crunch.
  • Diced bell pepper: Adds a touch of sweetness and a pop of color.
  • Garlic, grated: Because what’s a Caribbean dish without bold, vibrant flavors?
  • Scallions, diced: To add a mild, oniony flavor.
  • Dried thyme or fresh sprig: Elevates the dish with a burst of herbal aroma.
  • Diced Scotch bonnet or Habanero pepper (optional): For those who like a little heat.
  • Black pepper: To season and enhance the flavors.

The Method:

  1. In a medium-sized pot, cover the salted cod with water. Bring the water to a boil, then turn off the heat. Let the cod soak for one hour.
  2. Drain the water from the cod and replace it with fresh water. Bring to a boil again, turn off the heat, and let it soak for one more hour.
  3. Drain off the water from the cod and use a fork to flake the cod into small, bite-sized pieces. Set aside.
  4. Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat, then add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  5. Next, add thyme and sauté for 30 more seconds.
  6. Add the diced scallions, bell pepper, and Scotch bonnet pepper if using. Sauté for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté for 2 more minutes.
  8. Finally, add the prepared codfish to the skillet with the aromatics, season with black pepper, and sauté for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serving Suggestions:

Saltfish Buljol is versatile and can be enjoyed in many ways. Traditionally, it’s served with roasted breadfruit, bake, or flatbread, but it’s just as good on toast or even with rice. However you decide to serve it, I promise you’ll be hooked.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound salted dried cod (or salted Alaskan paddock)
  • 1/3 cup avocado oil or light olive oil
  • 1.5 cup diced tomatoes
  • 2 medium onions, diced.
  • 3/4 cup diced bell pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic, grated.
  • 4 stalks scallions, diced.
  • 1.5 teaspoon dried thyme or use fresh sprig
  • 1/2 teaspoon diced scotch bonnet or Habanero pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions
 

  • Cover salted cod with water in a medium-sized pot. Bring water to a boil and turn off the heat. Let cod soak for one hour.
  • Drain water from cod and replace it with fresh water. Bring to a boil again, turn off the heat and let soak for one more hour.
  • Drain off water from the cod and use a fork to flake cod into small, bite-sized pieces. Set aside.
  • Heat oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat, add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Next, add thyme and saute for 30 more seconds. Add diced scallions, bell pepper, scallions, and scotch bonnet pepper if using. Saute for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add diced tomatoes and saute for 2 more minutes. Add prepared codfish to the skillet with the aromatics, add black pepper and saute for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Place 1/2 cup servings on a plate and serve with roasted breadfruit, flatbread, toast or even rice. Enjoy!
